Project Overview show >>
Front Street is the major east-west connection into and through Kansas City’s Northeast Industrial District (NEID). Drivers from all over the city use the route to get to work and to deliver goods and services to businesses in the greater Kansas City area and beyond. The result is a lot of truck traffic and congestion. Recognizing that Front Street improvements are important for future economic development in the corridor, the City of Kansas City and the Missouri Department of Transportation are developing the Front Street Improvement Study. The study area spans three miles of Front Street from I-29/35 on the west to Universal Avenue on the east. No funds have been identified for the development of final design plans or roadway construction.
<< hidePurpose of the Study show >>
The purpose of the Front Street Improvement Study is to develop conceptual and preliminary design plans that illustrate future improvements for the roadway. Upgrades to Front Street will involve:
- Expanding the roadway one additional lane in each direction to better meet traffic demands.
- Building a multiuse trail that connects to Kansas City’s Riverfront
Heritage Trail, providing an alternative transportation option for
bicyclists and pedestrians in the corridor.

- Developing conceptual and preliminary design plans for the corridor.
